Psychotropic medication, sometimes called antipsychotic medication, is often prescribed to treat disorders such as bipolar disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
However, there are a number of side effects associated with psychotropic medication and most doctors recommend that their patients try a number of alternatives before embarking on such a treatment regimen. With that in mind, here are some of the psychotropic medications that should be avoided:
Stimulants drugs. There are many stimulant drugs available on the market. But if taken in combination with other psychotropic medications, stimulant drugs can become a powerful weapon in managing your mental disorder, especially when you are suffering from sleep apnea or are unable to get out of bed for several hours.
However, if taken alone, stimulant drugs are not for everyone and should only be used under a doctor’s supervision. Also, because stimulants can cause dangerous side effects, it is always best to consult with your doctor before starting a stimulant drug.
Antidepressants. If you are taking antidepressants as part of your treatment, they may be an effective treatment option for you. However, if you experience suicidal thoughts, you should stop taking the antidepressant immediately and consult your physician.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs).
They work by preventing the breakdown of monoamines, such as dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. However, this type of medication has been associated with potentially dangerous side effects, so it should be avoided by anyone who is having problems sleeping, has depression or any other mental disorder.
Tofu. Tofu is a type of tranquility agent that is often used to treat a variety of psychiatric conditions. It is effective at calming the patient, but there is a risk that the patient may develop severe side effects such as hallucinations, suicidal thoughts and severe changes in behavior.
Some medications have not been proven to be effective, including benzodiazepines (which are also known as Valium) and antidepressants such as Zoloft and Paxil. They can also interact with other medications and should only be used under a doctor’s advice.
As well, because they have serious side effects, they should never be used if you are pregnant, lactating or attempting to breastfeed.
Natural remedies are now available which are more effective and safer than pharmaceuticals but they should never be used by people who are having problems sleeping, mood swings, depression or have been diagnosed with alcoholism or drug dependency. They are also more affordable, although you may have to pay a higher price for them.
Some herbs and supplements can help sleep. Melatonin, Valerian root, hops, Valerian and kava, are all herbs that have been used for centuries to promote sleep and improve alertness. Herbal supplements are available in capsule form that can be mixed with water and taken in a cup before bedtime.
Melatonin can also be used in combination with medications to treat insomnia and sleep apnea.
Valerian is another herb that helps sleep problems. It is an herb that causes the patient to feel drowsy and sleepy without falling asleep.
Herbal remedies are very effective, but they must be used with care because they contain ingredients that can have an effect on the nervous system. It is important to speak with your physician before using any supplement.
There are some drawbacks to using herbal remedies, too. Many herbs and supplements can cause side effects such as dizziness, headaches, diarrhea, headaches, vomiting and nausea and upset stomach.
Although many patients prefer using these methods, they do have some disadvantages, too. If you want to try the above-mentioned psychotropic options, but are worried about side effects or don’t feel comfortable using prescription medications, you can discuss these with your doctor.
